It's a story about a Viet Nam vet from Long Island, NY named Joe Sciacci who returns to Viet Nam once a year to help the less fortunate people who live there. I tagged along with him for one of his trips and recorded his day to day activities. When Carlo first approached me about the story, I thought it was going to be one of those soldier filled with guilt returns to battle field to make up for his sins type stories. But, in reality, Joe was a much more interesting character than that. He was a medic during the war and never saw combat. He spend his entire time there helping sick and wounded people from all sides of the battle. He came home to New York and got into the roofing business but never forgot the good friends he made when he was in Viet Nam. He thought about them for more than 20 years and then finally realized he wanted to go back to see them again. Upon his return, he wasn't able to find many of his friends, but he did see many people in need of help. And the more he saw, the more he wanted to do something about it. Eventually, he started a one man charity and held his first fund raiser in the backyard of his home. He took the proceeds back to Viet Nam and started helping people out as he saw fit. Unhindered by any large charity or NGO ...
