The welcome Home Project was created by Bill McMillan and Kim Shelton in an effort to include the public in a formal welcome home for veterans. We have included family members in the program because, clearly, they too are veterans, living with both deployment and aftermath of war on a daily basis. And we have included the public in order to help bridge the gap between military and civilians and to encourage the larger community, regardless of personal politics, to join togetehr in common concern and caring for our returning veterans. The culminating event of the Welcome Home Project is the public gathering at the Angus Bowmer Theater in Ashland. The purpose of this event is to bring the public together with veterans who have been on the Welcome Home Retreat, as well as other veterans from around the valley, in order to formally and ceremonially welcome them home. For the Welcome to be meaningful, we, the public, are asked to step into our own courage in order to see the world through the eyes of the veterans. Our ceremonial welcome will be done with our ears, our eyes and our voices, as we bear witness to the stories of these men and women through their poetry, theater and song. Through this witnessing, we can begin to share the burden of these wars, and the veterans will feel a kind of community support, honoring and acceptance that has been sorely lacking in this country.
