It would be 30 years before their heroism would be formally recognized with the presentation of the US Army's Soldiers Medal in 1998. Prior to the start of the war in Iraq, University of Delaware Professor of History Guy Alchon invited the two surviving patriots, Thompson and Colburn, to come and tell their story to the University community and the larger public.
