John Edward Mackey 1923-2011 John Edward Mackey, an officer and a gentleman who loved peace enough to fight in WWII, the Korean War and in Viet Nam, died on November 26, 2011 at the age of 88. John passed in his home in Redding, California in the presence of his loving family. John was born in Brooklyn, New York to Agnes and George Mackey. After high school, John graduated from US Army Air Corp flight training class of 44G as a second Lieutenant. John served in the Pacific flying Air-Sea Rescue in PBY's as WWII drew to a close. He stayed in the reserves while attending the University of Denver and was recalled to the US Air Force at the beginning of the Korean War. He remained in the Air Force flying the F-100 "Super Saber" in Viet Nam in 1968, later he was base commander at Indian Springs Air Force Base before retiring in January 1974 after serving his country for 31 years. John met his devoted wife June Wall in 1951 while she was a student at Michigan State. John flew many x country flights in a B-26 to see June before they wed in 1954. The Mackey family moved to Redding in 1974 where they owned John Mackey Realty. Thirteen years later, John retired again, this time to play golf with friends at Riverview Golf and Country Club. John was a member of The Retired Officers Association, American Legion, VFW, Redding Elks, Shasta County Board of Realtors, Pilgrim Congregational Church, Riverview Golf and Country Club and served on the Shasta County Grand Jury.
