Where Art and Activism Meet ArtRage Gallery provides a space for political provocation By Nigel Smith Published Wed, Sep. 16, 2009, in The Mix. ArtRage could not be more apt a name for the politically charged art gallery located in Syracuses progressive Hawley-Green Historical District. Though the building itself is an open and inviting space, the provocative art that hangs on the walls cries out for a response. September marks the start of the gallerys second season. Their opening exhibition is a collection of work from a Maine-based activist group, The Beehive Collective. The Collectives radical graphic posters are typical of the work that ArtRage brings to Syracuse: art that promotes social awareness and encourages cultural change. The gallerys opening exhibit in October of 2008, entitled Combat Paper, featured the work of members of the Iraq Veterans Against the War. They cut up their uniforms, boiled the fabric and beat it into a paper-like substance. They then screened their art onto the material they created from their uniforms. The experience was deemed a form of art therapy that served as a way for the veterans to come to terms with their wartime experiences. Borderless prints of their work hung throughout the gallery during the exhibit. ArtRage is the brainchild of Dik Cool, founder and president of Syracuse Cultural Workers (SCW), located on the same block as ArtRage.
